but What do I wear?

You've found your photographer, selected your date, and are eagerly awaiting your session, BUT what are you going to wear? If you're paying hundreds of dollars for a session, wouldn't you want to make sure your photos turn out as perfect as possible? Many clients struggle when it comes to figuring out how to style their session and what will photograph best. That's where we (photographers) come in! I've compiled a list of tips on how to EASILY style your wardrobe before your session.

Tip #1: Coordinating is key

The idea of matching outfits can be fun, but to take your styling to the next level, try coordinating your color palette instead. Sometimes, it's easiest to take one particular garment and pull colors from that for the rest of the family to wear. Add in a complimentary secondary color for some variety, and you have a unique and simple ensemble that will look great in your photos!

Tip #2: Neutrals, Neutrals, Neutrals

I am a sucker for neutrals, and it's simply because they go with everything! It doesn't matter the location you are choosing, if you style with a neutral color palette, you can't go wrong. I would recommend considering the location you will be shooting at (i.e. the beach, an urban setting, etc.) and either pulling from the natural colors in those locations or trying to match the tone. For instance, at the beach I would encourage my clients to wear lighter toned neutrals versus the darker grays and blacks that would work better for an urban setting.

Tip #3: Patterns have a time and place

Let me make it clear that patterns are not a bad thing! Many photographers may try to steer you away from heavily patterned clothing items because they run the risk of making your photos look too busy and pulling focus, especially in certain settings. If your session is going to be somewhere with a lot of natural patterns (trees, leaves, flowers, etc.), it's best to stick to solids or very subtle patterns in order to help you (the subject) stand out. However, with a solid neutral backdrop, a fun pattern can be a great way to spice up your photos! It's always a great idea to check with your photographer about where you will be shooting and what their recommendations are for your wardrobe.

Tip #4: Let it move!

Especially when it comes to dresses, finding a garment that moves, drapes, and flows can make a world of difference in your photos! Besides being more comfortable and breezy, wearing something that can play in the wind or swishes when you walk adds a dynamic element to your pictures that you will LOVE.

**BONUS TIP** Even if you are not pregnant or doing maternity photos, shopping maternity dresses can be a great way to find extra flowy dresses for your session!
